Contests & Events
In addition to the various canoe races, the young and old can register to participate in one of the many contests scheduled for the weekend. New for 2011 are the Flower and Garden Show and the 5K Run / 1 Mile Fun Walk. The 1st annual Garrettsville Summerfest 2011 5K run and 1 mile fun run/walk will be an all road race to benefit glioma childhood cancer research. All proceeds will benefit Friends of Melana, an organization set up to find the causes, treatments and cure for glioma childhood cancer. The run will take place on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. -- if you haven’t pre-registered, you can still do so the morning of the race. The Punt, Pass and Kick Contest takes place on June 25th at 10 a.m. behind the fire station. Final registration for this contest is 9:30 a.m. Participants must show proof of age on the day of the competition -- birth certificates or baptismal records. The Lions Club Rubber Duck Race is a must see event and takes place at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to purchase your lucky duck and watch him make his way over the falls. Stomp those grapes and bottle that wine. The Homemade Wine making judging will take place at the Eagles Club on Saturday at 3 p.m. Prefer to bake? Then dust off those rolling pins and enter your creations in the Pie Baking Contest. You can drop off your pies (in disposable pans, please) at Sean’s Pub between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Leftover pies will be donated to the St. Ambrose Chicken Dinner Festival. “Brainfreeze” could be the word at the Ice Cream Eating Contest which takes place on Saturday at 2 p.m. on the West Stage. First place medals will be awarded to the winner in each age bracket. You won’t need to eat for days if you participate in the annual Hamburger Eating Contest -- a huge attraction Saturday night on the Main Stage. WNIR’s Stan Piatt will emcee this contest. Each contestant will have in front of them three burgers -- the first to finish will be the winner! This contest is only open to the first 10 entries -- there is a $10 entry fee -- winner will receive $50 cash and bragging rights. Bean bags will be flying on Saturday afternoon at Slim & Jumbo’s where the 5th Annual Cornhole Tournament will be taking place. America’s hottest dance show “So You Think You Can Dance” is the inspiration for SummerFest’s dance contest. On Sunday, the James A. Garfield Dance Team will be putting your moves to test on the dance floor located at Slim & Jumbo’s. Car of Cash which would you choose? The SummerFest Raffle will once again conclude this year’s festival with the winner driving off in a 2011 Chevy Cruze or walking away with up to $20,000 in cash. Big Chuck and Lil’ John will be drawing the winning tickets this year on the Main Stage. Tickets will be available all weekend long in the middle of Main Street for $20 each. June 24th, 2011
